Here you will find a dataset of annotated pointing gestures, a data coding manual, and r scripts for data analysis for the paper: Mesh, K. Pointing height marks target distance among the San Juan Quiahije Chatino. In the paper, I analyze how speakers of San Juan Quiahije Chatino (Oto-Mangean, Zapotecan) modulate the form of their pointing gestures to convey the distance of the pointing target. I analyze the form of over 800 pointing gestures produced during video recorded interviews, and show that Chatino speakers consistently follow the ‘far-is-up’ principle when pointing—the farther the referent, the higher the pointing arm will be raised. While this principle had thus far been only anecdotally observed in Latin America, I show that it is so robust in the pointing practices of the Chatino people that the form of the gesture alone reliably predicts the geographic distance of the target in landscape- scale space.
